Is Modularisation Valid for Every Product?

چکیده
This paper is a collection of facts from different journals, books, internet and own thoughts as well as the course in Development of Modular Products, held by Patrik Kenger and Gunnar Erixon. The intention of the paper is to presented and discussed advantages as well as disadvantages of modularisation. The technique of modularisation is often used in industry, it is regarded as a effective technique to implement new development processes. Due to the good reputation the technique has in development and finance departments, many new and some existing products, as well as the related production lines, are changed in order to fulfil the needs and guidelines set up for modularisation. This method causes expensive development and production processes, due to this fact it becomes clear that it is not always desirable to implement every new or already developed product as a modularised one. With reference to this fact and taking into consideration the experience of industry, it does not necessarily lead to an advantage (of product, quality or profit) if an already established or new production process is changed to a modularised one. To underline this, the paper shows examples from industry presenting the circumstances and products, which make modularisation reasonable. This paper is written to verify the decision-making process of establishing modularisation in a company and in which way. The paper uses examples concerning the method of modularisation to help to understand the problems of implementing modularisation.

Modularisation Development Path in the Auto Parts Industry: Comparison of Korea and Japan
Modularisation provides new challenges for the automobile industry. Following the trend, this study empirically compared the cases of Korea and Japan. This study finds out the characteristics of modularisation dynamics in Korea which are different from those of Japan. The results show that modularisation of Korean automobile industry is shifting to modularisation in inter-firm system which outs...
متن کاملHolonic Product Design: a Process for Modular Product Realisation
SUMMARY This paper introduces a fresh perspective on product modularisation and proposes a process for modular product realisation called Holonic Product Design. The holon has recently been adopted from Arthur Koestler's work to represent subsystem entities within manufacturing systems and the enterprise chain. In addition, it has been embraced as a philosophy for change that attempts to fashio...
متن کاملProduct lifecycle optimisation of car climate controls using analytical hierarchical process (Ahp) analysis and a multi-objective grouping genetic algorithm (mogga)
A product’s lifecycle performance (e.g. assembly, outsourcing, maintenance and recycling) can often be improved through modularity. However, modularisation under different and often conflicting lifecycle objectives is a complex problem that will ultimately require trade-offs. This paper presents a novel multi-objective modularity optimisation framework; the application of which is illustrated t...
متن کاملEquations in Many Sorted Algebras
This paper is preparation to prove Birkhoff’s Theorem. Some properties of many sorted algebras are proved. The last section of this work shows that every equation valid in a many sorted algebra is also valid in each subalgebra, and each image of it. Moreover for a family of many sorted algebras (Ai : i ∈ I) if every equation is valid in each Ai, i ∈ I then is also valid in product ∏(Ai : i ∈ I).
متن کاملStructured workflow approach to support evolvability
This work aims at explicitly modelling key concepts of the evolution process to support the product development process of complex multi-disciplinary systems such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems. The key concepts span over different domains of the product development process: product use (workflow models), system functionality (Function–Behaviour–State modelling), component interfac...
